Summit Bicycle Start Location

Mellow Routes

Tue 2011 Whine and Dine Mellow
6:00 PM ish 12-20 mi, 3-6 (yes that is six) LM-M Billy Goat

My philosophy about this ride is that we have a short amount of time on Earth, so why not stop and smell the roses. Expect at several regroups and nobody (who can ride an LM pace) to be left behind. We will eventually do most of the goats in the Los Gatos area, just not too many at a time. Both rides are social. We will do some easy sixes, and may try some harder fives. Route sheets provided on-line on the blog and a few on the ride. Meet at Summit Bikes on Main Street in Los Gatos, across the street from the Los Gatos Library. Rain or intense heat cancels. Burritos after. Be there around six-ish (I get off work at 5,) we roll around then.

The Bullwinkle Ride
The traditional first and last ride of the Whine and Dine season. This is also a short ride and is good for times when weather is an issue.
Bullwinkle Plus a bit more!
This is a twist on the Bullwinkle ride that honors our now departed moose and throws in some scenic riding!
Cactus Garden Ride | Cactus Garden + Montalvo
This is a fun ride to a really interesting place. Pam found this really cool cactus garden at an estate located in Saratoga.
Kennedy-Shannon and Half Hicks
This is Kennedy-Hicks-Shannon. A very pretty ride that is not over-the-top. But, it has VERY strenuous options!
Kennedy/Shannon with half or whole Hicks, Reynolds, Loma Almaden options
Cafeteria Style Ride; This mellow bike ride is cafeteria style. It has four options, ranges from Super Mellow to OMG. This ain’t no pansy ride! Mix-em, match-em or ride-em all if you dare.
The Lollipop Ride
Kathy Buck first led this ride once when I was gone. It has a fun ride with twists, turns but I think no rated goats. Try it, you’ll like it! [Map of ride]
Mt. Eden/Pierce
24 miles, 4LM, 1522 Feet of climbing, an ambitious ride for a mellow ride, usually saved for the almost longest riding day of this season! We will leave on-time and will keep to pace. “This is the big one Elizabeth!” Be prepared for a longer and a bit of a challenging ride.
Overlook Short Option 4 LM/M | Overlook plus Montalvo
Overlook was added to the mellow ride for 2011. The short option of this is at most 12 miles. It takes you up Overlook then twists around a few nice roads. But, it crosses three busy streets at unprotected crossings. So, be careful crossing!
Reynolds and Shannon/Kennedy, 5 LM/M
This is Shannon-Hicks/Reynolds-Kennedy. A fun and challenging climb. Be prepared, this is a serious climb!
Sanborn “Classic” Version
Sanborn, be prepared for serious climbing! This is a six, yes a six! This is the one six we do on the mellow ride. It is a very pretty ride and a good workout.
Shannon-Hicks-Kennedy
You have not lived until you have done it backwards. So, this ride is Kennedy/Shannon + Hicks only backwards! This is a good ride with a very hard option! It can be easy or very hard, depending on how it is ridden. Typically this ride will be various paces. I will not be climbing all of Hicks. Some of the hard core riders may want to do all of Hicks and maybe even more! Note the route sheet lists the climb to the top of Hicks but this day’s ride turns around at the switchback where the hard climb starts. The rest of Hicks as an option. If you want to do the option be prepared for a longer and a challenging ride. We will not be there for the option, so please plan to do it with a buddy!
Villa Montalvo Ojai Short Option [Traditional] | Slightly Shorter Easier Option
This route can be bit confusing for the directionally challenged (like me.) It takes cyclists up Villa Montalvo, Peach Hill and Ojai.

Coleman and Winfield Park and Ride

Coleman to Croy and Back (Shorter Option)
About 40 miles, 4 LM-M, a good ride. This ride features lunch at a great end of ride location, Tacos Al Pastor; my new favorite burrito and beer place. But, do not expect good food or water stops before that. Bring adequate water and food to sustain you for about nine tenths of the ride. You will have an appetite by the lunch that comes near the end of the ride. Please see Expectations for Special and Longer Rides (below).
Willow Springs/Llagas Rd. (About 42 miles)
Forty-Two-ish miles. Do not expect good food or water stops before that. This ride features lunch at a great end of ride location, Tacos Al Pastor; my new favorite burrito and beer place. Bring adequate water and food to sustain you for about nine tenths of the ride. You will have an appetite by the lunch that comes near the end of the ride. Please see Expectations for Special and Longer Rides (below).

Russian River Rally

Russian River Rally Whine Tasting Ride
This is the route sheet for the Russian River Rally whine tasting ride. Please be sure you pre-arrange with any wineries for any large groups that may be going there.

Three Expectations for Special and Longer Rides

  1. Please do not come on the ride expecting to be accommodated if you cannot keep the pace. These are social rides but they are listed at a certain pace with the expectation that the riders on the ride will be able to maintain the pace through the entirety of the ride. If you cannot keep the pace you may be dropped. That said, you have the right to complain and expect that the ride will not get out of control. If it seems the pace is being pushed please ask the ride leader(s) to bring the ride back to the rated pace.
  2. Please do not come on the ride expecting to be accommodated if you have plans to be back at a certain time later in the day. Most of these rides are planned as social day-long events. Unanticipated flats and head winds can happen and can cause the ride to go longer than expected. We do plan to be back in a reasonable time and commit to being back by dark. We plan on multiple breaks and regroups. There is no commitment to a certain time to be back. If you need to be back early, please make your own plans to do so.
  3. Please look at the route sheet and decide before the ride if that is a route you want to follow. The route is the route and if you want to follow another route please make your own plans to do so.
